Romance Scams: Love or Lies?

The truth is, there are many different F Words, but the one I want to shine a light on is fraud—specifically, romance fraud. Imagine believing you’ve found true love, only to discover the person behind the screen is a con artist. Romance scams don’t just break hearts—they empty bank accounts and shatter trust.

Fraudsters know exactly how to play the game. They reel in their victims with sweet words, grand promises, and too-good-to-be-true love stories. Then, when emotions run high, they strike—spinning dramatic tales of medical emergencies, frozen bank accounts, or once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunities. Before the victim even realizes what’s happening, they’re sending money, believing they’re helping someone they love.

But let’s get real: true love doesn’t require secrecy, pressure, or wiring money to someone you’ve never met. Fraud does.

How Romance Scams Work: From Sweet Talk to Empty Wallets

Romance fraud unfolds like a scripted play, with scammers following a predictable pattern:

🎭 Act 1: Crafting the Perfect Love Story

💔 The Fake Persona: Scammers steal photos from attractive strangers online and create fake but believable profiles. Military members, doctors, and successful entrepreneurs are common choices—they give an excuse for why they can’t meet in person.

💔 The Emotional Overload: They flood their victims with messages, love poems, and sweet talk. It feels soulmate-level intense, but it’s all designed to fast-track trust.

💔 The Isolation Strategy: Scammers discourage their victims from talking to friends and family, warning them that “people won’t understand.” This isolates the target and makes them more dependent on their scammer for emotional validation.

🎭 Act 2: The Ask—Money, Gifts, and Wire Transfers

💰 The Sob Story: Once trust is built, the scammer introduces a financial crisis—a medical emergency, a business deal gone wrong, or legal trouble. It’s always urgent, and it’s always personal.

💰 The First Request: The scammer starts small. Maybe it’s just a few hundred dollars for a plane ticket or a quick loan until payday. But once a victim sends money, the floodgates open.

💰 The Never-Ending Cycle: They keep asking—using guilt, desperation, and even fake receipts to “prove” they’ll pay the victim back. But spoiler alert: they won’t.

💰 The Disappearing Act: When the money dries up or the victim starts questioning things, the scammer vanishes—leaving behind heartbreak and financial ruin.

🚨 Red Flags: How to Spot a Romance Scam Before It’s Too Late

Scammers follow a predictable playbook, so spotting the warning signs early can save you from heartbreak (and an empty wallet). Here’s what to watch for:

💘 Too Fast, Too Furious

💬 “I love you”—on day three. 🚩 💬 “You’re my soulmate.” 🚩 💬 “I’ve never felt this way before.” 🚩

Romance scammers rush relationships to build trust quickly. If someone is professing undying love before you’ve even met, it’s time to slow down and ask why.

🙈 They Avoid Meeting Face-to-Face

They’ll always have an excuse:

  • “I’m overseas for work.”
  • “I’m deployed on a secret mission.”
  • “My webcam is broken.”

🚨 If someone refuses video calls or in-person meetings, they’re hiding something.

💵 The Money Trap

💰 Asking for money is the ultimate red flag. No exceptions.

🚩 “I need help paying for my mom’s surgery.”
🚩 “My account is frozen, and I just need a loan until I get paid.”
🚩 “I need money for a plane ticket so we can finally be together.”

Legitimate relationships don’t come with a price tag.

🤐 The Secrecy Game

Scammers want their victims isolated. They’ll say:

  • “Don’t tell anyone—they wouldn’t understand.”
  • “People are just jealous of our love.”
  • “If you trust me, you’ll keep this between us.”

🚨 Real love doesn’t require secrecy. If someone is pressuring you to keep your relationship private, that’s a major warning sign.

How to Protect Yourself from Romance Scams

Triple-check their story. Google their name, do a reverse image search, and see if their photos pop up elsewhere. ✅ Keep personal details private. Don’t share bank info, home addresses, or anything that can be used to manipulate you. ✅ Talk to someone you trust. A fresh set of eyes can spot the red flags you might be ignoring.NEVER send money. If someone asks for cash—game over.

🚨 If something feels off, trust your gut. Fraud doesn’t take a day off, and neither should your awareness.

If you or someone you know has been targeted by a romance fraudster, don’t stay silent.
